Louise Bateman to bring strategic approach to Planet First marketing and communications role and to help Planet Mark-certified organisations to communicate more effectively on sustainability
Planet First has appointed Louise Bateman to head up its marketing and communications operation. Louise (pictured) is a communications expert, journalist and content marketing practitioner with deep sector knowledge of the green business agenda and proven skills in how to engage audiences around sustainability. She co-founded GreenWise Business, a leading independent UK green B2B online news and information publisher, almost a decade ago.
Commenting on the new appointment, Planet First ceo Steve Malkin, said: “Communicating sustainability is extremely challenging but truly exciting. Great communication is fundamental to the uptake of sustainability in businesses and with individuals. Louise is uniquely skilled and experienced to help organisations achieving The Planet Mark position themselves beyond compliance and unlock the transformational benefits of sustainability.”
Louise added: “I’m delighted to have been appointed head of marketing and communications at Planet First, a company that I believe is doing great things to support businesses that want to reduce their carbon footprint and become more sustainable. I’m immensely impressed by Steve and the rest of the team’s passion, ideas and commitment and I’m really looking forward to working with them, their clients and partners to make business sustainability mainstream.”
Planet First provides The Planet Mark certification to organisations demonstrating a commitment to continuously reduce their environmental footprint and helps them take advantage of the business opportunities in sustainability. It recently launched The Planet Mark for Properties to certify the carbon footprint of existing buildings.
“It’s an exciting time to be joining Planet First: the company is expanding its Planet Mark certification scheme, increasing its client base across different sectors and continues to innovate the ways it measures, engages and communicates around sustainability,” said Louise. “My role will be to build on that solid base with a clear marketing and communications strategy for the business and an effective communication programme for those organisations and projects that have gained The Planet Mark certification.”
Louise began her career as a journalist, reporting for many years on the film and media industries for leading trade titles such as Broadcast and The Hollywood Reporter. In 2008, she co-founded, GreenWise Business, an independent daily news and information service for businesses operating in the green sector. A few years later, she launched Wise Up Media, a content marketing agency supporting businesses on their sustainability journey. Clients she worked with included Lloyds Bank, the Institute for Sustainability and the Institute for Education.
The newly created position of head of marketing and communications replaces the former role of communications manager at Planet First, which was held by Camilla Oelman, who recently left to join the Energy Saving Trust.
Planet First works with dozens of businesses, charities and public sector organisations, including Marks and Spencer, Land Securities, Bywaters and Prologis, to help them reduce their energy, carbon, water and waste. It specialises in carbon footprinting, data management, stakeholder engagement and communications to deliver continuous improvement in sustainability.
