THE PLANET MARK
The Planet Mark is a sustainability certification suitable for any size organisation. Our customers are large and small and come from many different sectors. The certification programme is awarded to businesses, properties, new developments and projects.
The Planet Mark is a low resource programme that is proven to work. On average, Planet Mark-certified businesses make a 17% carbon saving each year per employee through energy use, waste, water, travel and procurement and can expect to make a cost savings of at least £100 per employee per annum.
The price of The Planet Mark Certification varies depending on the number of employees you have and the number of locations included in your reporting. If you would like to find out more about our pricing, please call +44 203 751 8108
The certification process is straightforward and can take as little as two weeks. For your first year’s accreditation you need to commit to reduce your carbon emissions by at least 2.5% over a 12 month period and provide us with twelve months’ worth of energy data and we will do the rest.
The Planet Mark supports businesses seeking to comply with the new ISO14001 by: Setting Targets. Enabling continuous improvement. Ensuring good governance. Promoting communication & stakeholder engagement
The Eden Project is educational charity and a multi-award winning international visitor destination and centre for education in sustainability and innovation based in Cornwall. Each certification comes with 12 free tickets to their incredible visitor attraction, encouraging organisations to learn more about climate change and the importance of biodiversity. The Planet Mark also contributes 5% of all certification fees to the Eden Project, to support, promote, and enhance connections us to each other and the living world. Eden has been part of The Planet Mark story since the outset and helps organisations improve their sustainability performance and tackle climate change through:
- positive brand association
- supporting vital children’s educational programmes
- improving biodiversity
- sustainability leadership via Eden’s Hothouse programme.
Your carbon footprint will include the emissions-releasing activities you want to measure. There is a requirement to report ‘direct’ Scope 1 and 2 emissions (measurement frameworks set out by WRI/WBCSD GHG Protocol), relating to electricity and fuel use in buildings and owned vehicles. We encourage you to report on ‘indirect’ Scope 3 emissions too, such as water, waste, business travel and other procured goods and services.
If you are new to carbon footprinting please download our free Beginners Guide to Carbon Footprinting as a first step.
In your first year, we encourage you to reduce your carbon footprint by 5% annually and set a required minimum of 2.5%, but you are welcome to set your own annual target to fit your sustainability strategy.
To get there, the process is simple: all you need to do is decide what emissions-releasing activities you want to measure, collect the data and we’ll do the rest.

These resources help you raise awareness of sustainability in your organisation, develop knowledge and skills, encourage positive behaviour change and achieve your sustainability objectives.
The Planet Mark is a community of like-minded businesses and as such as there are many opportunities for networking. We will provide you with the opportunity to attend, join in with, or co-host events, contribute to online forums and share information throughout the year, whilst benefiting from relationships with our partners.
The Planet Mark provides marketing channels and materials to communicate your sustainability achievements and works closely with all its certified organisations to develop shared media communications opportunities and news stories around current issues in sustainability. The Planet Mark can also be used in your sales presentations, bids and tenders.
From January 2019, we added a service for holders of The Planet Mark to measure their social value. The Planet Mark will continue to be measured and awarded on reductions in carbon emissions, so organisations opting into social value measurement will be able to report this in addition as a positive influence on society and therefore annual improvements will not be required.
