Albus Environmental, a specialist healthcare waste management firm, has been awarded The Planet Mark™ Certificate for its commitment to ongoing progress in sustainability.
Albus Environmental, based in the South East of England, provides bespoke healthcare waste management service to a variety of businesses including doctor’s surgeries, dental practices and nursing homes.
Albus Environmental is already accredited to internationally recognised environmental accreditation ISO14001, but by achieving The Planet Mark™ the company is stepping up its commitment to sustainability by reporting its carbon footprint for the first time and by committing to year-on-year reductions in its carbon emissions.
The company’s first annual carbon footprint (year end March 2017) includes emissions from its fleet travel and waste generated from its office in Kent. The relative carbon footprint in year ending March 2017 was 3.6 tonnes of CO2 equivalent (tCO2e) per employee. Albus’ absolute carbon footprint for the same period was 21.8 tCO2e. The most significant source of emissions relates to fleet activities (99.5% of total emissions), followed by waste disposal (0.5% of total emissions).
Building-related emissions (from electricity and water) were not measured due to lack of data as these sources are managed and held by the landlord. However, due to the size of the office (60m2) and the nature of the business, office energy and water usage were deemed to have a negligible contribution to the business’ carbon footprint.
On being presented with The Planet Mark™ Certificate (see picture), Albus Environmental said: “We are in a sector that is highly regulated with little room to recycle or reuse. Despite this we are determined to be as sustainable as possible, right to our core. The Planet Mark™ is helping us to step up to our environmental responsibilities no matter what the challenges.”

The Planet Mark™ Certificate recognises Albus’ good practice in sustainability, including:
- measuring carbon emissions from fleet travel and waste
- investing in the Eden Project to support education on climate change
- storing 260 tCO2e by protecting one acre of endangered rainforest through the charity Cool Earth
- committing to engage employees and suppliers to drive improvements
- Albus has has set a target to reduce emissions by 5% in its next reporting period.
The Planet Mark™ was founded in 2013 with the iconic Eden Project in Cornwall, UK, and is awarded to businesses, properties, new developments and projects that are committed to reducing their carbon emissions.
Since it launched, The Planet Mark™ has certified over 100 organisations and helped holders of The Planet Mark™ cut their average carbon emissions per employee by 10% per annum.
Holders of The Planet Mark™ have a minimum requirement to reduce their carbon emissions by 2.5% per year.
