The Planet Mark™ has unveiled that its Sustainability Certification measurably contributes to seven of the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including Climate Action – a key Goal businesses need to address.

 

The announcement was made at a packed event in London yesterday (February 1) attended by over 150 guests representing UK and international organisations. The event, organised by The Planet Mark™ in partnership with the Legal Sustainability Alliance (LSA) and hosted by legal firm Linklaters, addressed how business can prepare for the SDGs.

Keynote speakers included MP, Mary Creagh, chair of the Environmental Audit Committee, Louise Scott, Global Sustainability chief operating officer at PwC UK and Piers Bradford, managing director of Project Everyone, which seeks to put the power of great communications behind the UN’s Goals.

Steve Malkin, founder of The Planet Mark™, explained how through evidence-based data collated via The Planet Mark™ programme, holders of the certification can contribute measurably to the following seven SDGs:

  • Goal 7 – Affordable and clean energy
  • Goal 9 – Industry, innovation and infrastructure
  • Goal 11 – Sustainable cities
  • Goal 12 – Sustainable consumption and production
  • Goal 13 – Climate action
  • Goal 14 – Life below water
  • Goal 15 – Life on land.

It is estimated the SDGs could represent a $12 trillion economic opportunity by 2030, through transforming business models to better meet society’s needs. Unilever CEO Paul Polman has described them as the “greatest economic opportunity of a lifetime”.

But latest research by PwC reveals that as many as two in five firms are either ignoring or having no meaningful engagement with the SDGs.

“Momentum has been building within the business community to take action over the last two years. But latest evidence suggests those efforts could be falling short due to a lack of meaningful and measurable action,” said Steve. “We are committed to helping organisations contribute to the Global Goals. Today’s announcement is intended to show how holders of The Planet Mark™ are contributing meaningfully and measurably to the Goals and we hope will encourage others to follow suit”.

Speaking at the event, Louise Scott, who has been instrumental in developing in-depth analysis and tools to help businesses address the Goals, noted “companies that have their objectives aligned with the Global Goals are outperforming the rest of the market”.

Mary Creagh said that it was falling on business to take a leadership role on the SDGs because of a “donought-shaped hole” in the UK Government’s policy regarding the Goals – despite being one of the 193 member states of the United Nations that signed up to the SDGs in 2015.

“Businesses are saying they have a moral duty to align with the Global Goals,” Mary said, adding: “There has never been more urgency for the Government to adopt the SDGs”.

Piers Bradford urged businesses not to give up the SDGs and provided an inspiring run through of the powerful and highly effective communications work being undertaken by Project Everyone, which is partnering with the UN to raise awareness of the Global Goals around the world.
