p2p announces refocused content around UN Sustainable Development Goals

plate2planet, the one-stop-shop digital platform for practical information about sustainability in the food sector, unveiled a new look and content focused around the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at its 2017 annual live event in November.

 

Plate2planet, which is powered by Bidfood, a holder of The Planet Mark™ Sustainability Certificate, chose the theme of responsible production and consumption – Goal 12 of the SDGs – for its second ever live summit, held at sustainable building The Crystal, in London, on November 2.

The theme reflected plate2planet’s new content streams – Responsible Production, Responsible Consumption, Waste Prevention and Community Engagement – and their alignments with the SDGs. “We’re aligning to the UN Sustainability Goals to focus our activity on plate2planet and help drive responsible production and consumption across foodservice and help you to deliver real change for your organisation,” said Shirley Duncalf, head of Sustainable Development, Bidfood.

This year’s plate2planet Live event was once again hosted by Steve Malkin, founder of The Planet Mark TM (pictured), a content partner of plate2planet. Steve was joined by speakers and panellists including Michael Jones of WRAP, Wendy Duncan at Unilever, Andrew Stephen, of the Sustainable Restaurant Association and Polly Hofmann of FareShare.

WRAP’s Michael Jones focused on the problem of food waste citing that 18% of food bought in the foodservice and hospitality industry is wasted, amounting to £2.5 billion worth of food thrown away by the sector annually. WRAP has been collaborating with Bidfood on solutions to the problem, and unveiled a new suite of resources to help businesses prevent food waste that are now available on the plate2planet website.

The event also focused on sustainable menus, with a lively panel debate, which included Andrew Steven, chief executive of the Sustainable Restaurant Association (SRA) and Wendy Duncan, the R&D technical manager at Unilever, sharing their own experiences of success with sustainable menus.

Polly Hofmann commercial director at FareShare was interviewed on the subject of food poverty and explained how the charity she works for is addressing the problem by redistributing good food that is going to waste to frontline charities.

The audience and speakers were also asked to pledge their support to change during the event.

Shirley said: “Our second ever plate2planet Live! event was a tremendous success and a testament to how far the industry has come in the last year.

“However, there is still so much more we can do as an industry, with events like this definitely pointing us in the right direction and driving forward momentum to change for the better.”
