The rainforest in Papua New Guinea is under threat from loggers

Cool Earth, the Planet Mark-certified charity that is working to halt rainforest destruction, has raised tens of thousands of pounds in one night to save 120,000 acres of land in Papua New Guinea from illegal logging.

The charity, announced today that it had raised £97,000 at a launch event it held in London last week. The event was attended by fashion designer and environmentalist Vivienne Westwood and actress Pamela Anderson, as well as business supporters including Planet First, Prologis and Casual Films.

Papua New Guinea is home to the world’s third largest rainforest, which contains more undisclosed species than anywhere else on earth. But already 5.2 million hectares of land in the country has been handed over to loggers. Cool Earth says the land grab is happening despite communities owning the land under long established ancestral land rights.

The Yakolima Project will see Cool Earth partner with three villages in the Milne Bay Province of Papua New Guinea to combat land grab for palm oil plantations.

“Cool Earth is one of those rare charities that gets things done,” commented Westwood, who is a now a patron of the charity. “When I discovered them five years ago they had a plan to save the rainforest and they are bang on track.” Westwood has already donated £1 million to the charity.

Last week’s launch event was held at the Barbican Centre’s tropical conservatory and attracted celebrities including model and actress Dree Hemmingway, Today’s John Humphreys, model Max Rogers, MP Frank Field and businessman Johan Eliasch, who founded Cool Earth in 2007. They were joined by representatives from business that support the charity.

Cool Earth says it needs to raise £1.2 million in total to continue its work. Donating £60 is equivalent to protecting an acre of rainforest and donors receive a personalised certificate and online dashboard with stories from the project.
