Demonstrating sustainability in your business operations and your supply chain is increasingly important in winning and retaining customers

Sustainable procurement

Suppliers constantly need to improve their sustainability credentials, particularly in response to information requests and pre-qualification questionnaires. In order to award contracts, many public sector organisations and private companies require their suppliers to provide evidence of sustainability in their business and their supply chain.

So how can you demonstrate you are a sustainable supplier?

Here are three steps to demonstrate your sustainability credentials to your customers and potential customers:

1. Start with your organisation –  procurers increasingly expect their suppliers to understand their environmental impacts and to provide independent evidence they are measuring their impacts. Providing evidence of a carbon reduction target based on your carbon footprint and a plan of how you intend to reach that target will also put you in a competitive advantage.

2. Be transparent and accountable – procurers often want to see your carbon footprint and sustainability commitments evidenced in the public domain. This could be communicated through your website, via accreditations, such as The Planet Mark, and through awards and media coverage.

3. Engage your employees – procurers increasingly want to see a level of awareness and knowledge about sustainability throughout organisations within their supply chain. This can be done through formal training, internal training or empowering staff by making them sustainability champions.
